Chapter 10

The party continues into the night, but I grow tired and annoyed at myself for still wanting Brandon.

Why couldn’t I say ‘no’?

It’s such an easy word to say but in the moment, my mouth froze.

I wanted to say no.

I really did.

But I couldn’t.

When Brandon is busy talking, I nip down into the cabin and enter our assigned bedroom.

My bag is already there, waiting for me, so I take care of my ablutions, careful to brush my hair, my teeth, and mechanically add a little color to my lips, my cheeks, and waterproof mascara. My nightie is a frumpy let down, but I didn't plan on sharing, and get into bed wishing I'd brought something more sultry than a grey jersey.

“Like it matters... stop thinking about him,” I whisper to myself.

In bed, I can't stop thinking about my man-whore, about our night together.

Fact is, he confounds me.

I'm not usually a pushover with men—quite the opposite. I'm the one who keeps her distance because I want a man like my father, but so far, no one's lived up to him.

They're not ambitious enough, not cute enough, not sensitive enough (or too sensitive), and not dominant enough (or too dominant).

The list goes on and on, but I have never been in this position before.

I've never wanted someone who doesn't want me.

Well, he wants to screw me, but nothing else, and I don't like how that makes me feel.

“Oh quit thinking and go to sleep. Tomorrow this will all be over and I won't see him again till the wedding. Sleep Britney.”

I close my eyes, pull up the quilt and snuggle.

Soon, I imagine making love to Brandon, and my dream of him sweeps me off into sleep.
